She'd wanted him to come along. She'd fought for it, even. She'd fought for John to accompany the mission, too-- not entirely for professional reasons, she'd admit, but their friendship was important to her.
And then, Simon had decided to tell her the truth. "I met someone." He didn't apologise.
She'd almost cried. Far away in another galaxy, guarding her heart with rarely-relenting care, deliberately staying faithful to someone she hadn't been sure she'd ever see again, she had had hope. Hope that the man she'd loved back on Earth would do the same, despite what she'd said. That he'd wait for her.
She should have known.
Back on board the Daedalus, headed for Atlantis, she began to feel they were on their way home, but something was still missing.
On their eighth day out, Elizabeth woke with a hangover and a sleeping companion-- although by the time she'd turned over, he'd woken.
"Thank you," he whispered to her, index finger skimming her jawline.
"For what?" she'd murmured, puzzled, head pounding.
John Sheppard smiled gently, and drew her close with the arm that was slung over her waist. "For fighting. For giving in. For being here." He placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.
Somehow, that was enough.
