He would have greatly liked to have seen the look on the other man's face when the lie was told. He wanted to have been there, if only for a second. It would have helped him figure out much earlier what leverage he might be able to use and how. It didn't make much difference now, but he wanted to have been there.
He knew what to do when he realised the full degree of her importance. And he'd done it. He stood with the woman yoked against him next to the gate, confident that the man currently aiming a weapon in his direction would not dare risk hurting the one he held hostage. He taunted as much, and yanked at the throat in his grip a little tighter as the struggle slowed.
Five words later, the commander knew it was a bluff.
Five seconds after that, he realised it wasn't.
