He wasn't there when she fell.
He'd been gone six months, and though she could push Atlantis to work without him she couldn't feel anything when she did it. She knew she couldn't live that way indefinitely; she could see only one way out of that bind.
Two days later, an unscheduled off-world activation brought him back-- in time to find her lying in the infirmary, motionless and pale as alabaster.
She didn't hear his whispered apology.
When they switched off the humming machine at her side, his heart irretrievably shattered.
