Her eyes are on him only for a moment, dropping away quickly as they always do, and she turns away with the familiar mannerism she inherited from her mother, her blonde hair falling seamlessly around a face that is still innocent, even after everything she's seen.
Ellie is not his biological child. He knows this, and yet to him she will always be his little girl, the daughter he held as she learned to ride her bicycle and fell off, tending to scraped knees before getting called in and away-- again. He missed out on her childhood.
So many regrets.
